EARLY APRIL 2008

DURROW DEVELOPMENT FORUM - PRESIDENTIAL VISIT: Monday 31st March saw the visit of President Mary McAleese to Durrow. It was a memorable moment for all those present. Children from Our Lady’s Meadow NS and from Cullohill NS greeted the President and her entourage by waving the tricolours as their cars drove up the avenue to Castle Durrow. After being introduced to the Durrow Development Forum Committee, the President and her husband Doctor Martin McAleese were led through the Castle to the banqueting hall. On the way, exhibitions on Durrow’s history and achievements of different groups were displayed and at the end, a line of cheering children from the schools welcomed her to the hall. Hughie Sheppard, Chairperson of Durrow Development Forum thanked Mary McAleese for honouring Durrow with her visit. He described her as an “everyday President for everyday people” and if there wasn’t a protocol, he would say “howya Mary? Will you come in and have a cop of tae? Amused by the joke, Mary McAleese replied that she herself has a fool proof recipe for the Cullohill Apple Pie and that it would go well with a cup of tea. She was wondering who had planned the weather as it was a nice, sunny morning following a stormy night. She talked about the time backing the eighteen hundreds, that back then life wasn’t as easy. Many generations have lived in Durrow and probably this one is one that people have dreamed of years ago, as this is the best ever. Also she praised the community spirit in Durrow where many clubs and associations are well alive and working together to make Durrow a better place. She said that at the end of the tri-centenary festivities everyone will “feel a deep sense of fulfilment in celebrating all that is good in Durrow”. She ended up her speech with one big unanswered question “what happens for the next 300 years?”. Before being presented with flowers and books on the history of Durrow, President Mary McAleese unveiled a plaque commemorating the “on-going commitment to voluntary community development” which will be placed in a prominent place later on in the year. After the speeches, President Mary McAleese then mingled with the local people who had gathered at Durrow Castle to meet her. A big thank you to all the people who turned out to welcome the President of Ireland to Durrow and to all those who gave of their time to make the occasion a memorable one for everyone.
