EXHIBITION BY MAEVE COLLINS: An exhibition entitled Light, Space and the Body by Maeve Collins will be held at the Dunamaise Arts Centre from 4th March to 30th March, 2008. Opening 7th March at 8pm. Light, Space and the Body is a series of self-portraits. Maeve use’s meditation as her process. She meditates in art. Through the journey of meditation she arrives at the embodiment of self which is the work. The manifestation of the embodiment is through transparent materials that Maeve layers, incorporating light and space. The materiality of the light opens up unseen spaces. The layering of surfaces attempts to hold a fleeting sense of drawings from the body. Abstracted lines belie the continual transformation of the body into the sensual, mental and emotional and back again. Irregular edges are juxtaposed with regular edges. The metaphorical use of materials aspire to the familiar and strange. The work reflects inner light and space to float in.The qualities of the work reveal a tense stillness and an expressive quietness with a reflective need. Spacial works form part of the instillation, seven mounted on the wall and twelve on plinths. Deconstructed mixed media drawings of the body transferred onto voile material, held in clear casting resin are combined with glass, mirror and steel frames that form part of the work. In seven photographic artworks, the voile material is enclosed with the body in such a way that each mirrors the other. The 36 intimate, resin pieces, entitled “Still”, have a quiet confidence, they fit into the hand and seem naturally to belong to the body. By allowing the viewer to handle these art works, the viewer is offered an experience of Presence in this artwork Light, Space and the Body. Maeve Collins was born in Durrow, Co. Laois in 1977. She obtained her primary Fine Art Degree from The University of Ulster in 2000. A full time artist, she is currently based in Laois. Maeve was the receipient of The Tyrone Gutherie Award from Laois County Council in 2007, and has exhibited in group shows in Ireland and the UK.

EARLY FEBRUARY 2008
HEALTH ALERT IN DURROW: Thanks to a series of planned Government cutbacks your local Pharmacy, like many other rural Pharmacies is in danger of losing many of its services and possible closure. This is a time when the National Health Strategy is supposedly “prioritising preventative medicine” and “Community care! - some contradiction! In a reply to a submission to the Durrow Draft Plan December 2007 – the Manager’s Report Ref. DDTP/I Item No. 4 reads as follows: “The Planning Authority encourages the provision of a range of services in rural towns and villages across the county in order to reduce the need for travel and in the interest of proper planning and sustainable development” How does this square with the Dept. of Health? In the past 20 years or so more than 20 businesses have closed in Durrow and if Pharmacy Services are threatened how many other businesses will survive – Garda Station, Post Office, Bank and other Retail. Far from reducing services in Durrow we should be aiming for and hoping for ser services – e.g. Dental, Optical, Legal and Nursing Home/Day Care come to mind. What can you do – one or preferably both of the following: Sign a petition in your local Pharmacy; Contact you local TD’s to register your concern and protest to: Minister Brian Cowan Email: tullamoredfa@eircom.net Tel: (057) 9321976; Charles Flanagan TD Email: Charlie.flanagan@finegael.ie Tel: (057) 8620232; Olwyn Enright TD Email: olwyn.enright@oireachtas.ie Tel: (057) 9122326; Sean Fleming TD Email: sean.fleming@oireachtas.ie Tel: (057) 8732692
